Of all provinces in China, Gross Domestic Product or GDP of Guangdong Province ranks the first place, which surpasses that of Chinese Taiwan, Hong Kong or Singapore and GDP of Guangzhou ranks the third place in all cities of China. China Import and Export Fair (Another name is Canton Fair), formerly Chinese Export Commodities Fair, is held in Guangzhou regularly since 1950’s.
Historically,Guangzhou was the starting point of Maritime Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618~ 907). As early as the 14th century in the Ming Dynasty (A.D.1368~1644) & Qing Dynasty (A.D. 1636~1912), Guangzhou was served as a famous treaty port for foreign trade.
Historical Relation between India and Guangzhou
More than 1,400 years ago during Putong period of the Southern Liang Dynasty (A.D. 521~526), the 28th ancestor of ancient Indian Buddhism—Bodhidharma firstly landed in an ancient dock of thePearl River, Guangzhou. After his arrival, Xilai Temple was constructed (literally ‘visitor from the west’ and present-day Hualin Temple), paving the way for establishing Chinese Buddhism Zen. Since then Bodhidharma has been the 1st originator of the Zen of Chinese Buddhism. A few years ago, a magnificent Bodhidharma Hall, just opposite Five Hundred Arhats Hall of Hualin Temple, was built, in which Bodhidharma statue of over 6 meters high was erected. In South Sea God Temple or Temple of Nanhai God which was constructed as early as A.D. 594 and reconstructed last century and was served as starting dock of ancient Maritime Silk Road, one cannot fail to see an Indian God. Legend has it that the Indian emissary became a Chinese god because he was attracted by the beautiful landscape of the Pearl River and left in Guangzhou.
